
One day, a menacing man entered my Taekwon-do
school in New York City during class. He was carrying a broom stick and
talking incoherently. He smelled like a port-o-potty after an NFL football
game and he was clearly on drugs. My instructor was the first person to
become aware of his presence and he moved quickly to address the situation.

Attending class is the first step in learning
to master taekwon-do. The instructor will tailor the class to the
students in attendance in order to provide the best lessons for the day.
Class activities and exercises are the most
important part of taekwon-do training because this is the way it has been
handed down for generations. However, there are some other important
ways that a student can practice taekwon-do which may not be obvious.

When we talk about martial arts,
people often say things like "only use it in
self-defense" or "learn self-defense so you don't have to use it".
Taekwon-do
as well as most
martial arts proclaims to benefit the practitioner in many different
ways. Can it really improve your health? I believe it can because I’ve been
practicing for over 10 years and have witnessed an improved ability to perceive,
prevent, and overcome illnesses.
When I ask my master instructor “what is taekwon-do?” he will
