2014 Board Break-a-thon

On March 21, 2014, the students and instructors of Oneonta Taekwon-Do gathered to demonstrate board breaking as a means of raising money to pay for improvements to a new location.

The students were divided up into 4 “teams”.  Not for competition purposes, but to allow each group to work together to organize and prepare their demonstrations.  Master Mannion and black belt John Buck sat at the judges table to oversee the safety and technique of the demonstrators.

To those who are unfamiliar with Taekwon-Do board breaking, the purpose is to give students an opportunity to demonstrate their powerful techniques without hurting people.  During sparring and contact fighting, we need to be safe and avoid hurting each other so that we may continue to train.  However, without an opportunity to execute 100% effort into a strike, we do not know our limitations or capabilities.  Some board breaks demonstrate power; others demonstrate control or accuracy.

Congratulations to all those who participated.  There were some very impressive board breaks.  The event was enjoyed by everyone and many asked to make this an annual event.   The school will consider doing it again in the future although it will most likely be done as a charity fund raiser next time.

We hope you enjoy the video that Ms. Paparteys prepared.  Please offer her your thanks for the hard work she put into this 10 minute video.
