Zig Ziglar’s method for achieving goals

If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll never get there.

Theory, theory, theory. Blah, blah, blah.

Over the years I’ve read countless articles and books on personal development and the pursuit of goals.  Most of them were put down, tossed aside, <yawn>, NEXT!

A couple of years ago, I was in one of the worst financial struggles of my life and happened to borrow this video by Zig Ziglar on goals.  Before it was over, I had pen in hand, a half dozen of my goals written down, and the 7 critical factors needed to achieve them.  I can honestly say that this simple video and my attention to filling out these one-page worksheets is the second biggest reason I overcame financial disaster.

This video and Ziglar’s 7 steps to setting and achieving goals are so tangible you can taste them!  What’s more, by following his instructions and writing down the answers to the 7 critical questions, you can FOCUS your attention on doing what needs to be done.

The following 3 videos are excerpts from the 1 hour video and don’t quite do it justice.   Here is my summary of the 7 questions:

1)  State the goal in detail  (see Yogi Berra quote, above)

2) Set the due date  ( A Goal is a Dream with a deadline – no date means it is just a wish )

3) Identify the obstacles to achieving the goal  ( By thinking about them and writing them down, you can face them head on.  If you don’t, you’ll surely quit at the first sign of trouble. )

4) Identify the PEOPLE, GROUPS, and ORGANIZATIONS that can assist. (Yes!! People will help you if you ask them.  If you don’t THINK to ask them and identify them, they can’t help you!!! )

5)  List the benefits to achieving the goal.  ( Achieving goals isn’t reward enough – focus on the outcome and hold tight to that vision! )

6)  List the skills you need to acquire to attain the goal. ( This becomes your next set of reading.  Go ahead and put a couple items on your Amazon wishlist!  Seek out people who PLAY at things that are hard for you!  )

7)  Develop a plan  ( Break your goal down into manageable chunks.  You’ll see your roadmap and have the confidence that you can succeed! )
